About the place:
The city of Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier is located in the department of Nièvre, about 15 kilometers from Clamecy. It’s close to the border with Bourgogne and has a population of around 2000 inhabitants. The area was already occupied during Gallo-Roman times by Légerii people, but it wasn’t until the 12th century that an important settlement appears near this place under its current name (not far away there are still remains of Roman villa). Even though many other cities were destroyed or vanished over time, Saint Pierre le Moütier miraculously survived because it developed inside fortifications built by Charles IV de Bourbon after 1383 who wanted to protect his land against English invasions.
The town’s name translates to “St. Peter from Moûtiers” and was given this title thanks to its proximity to the city of Moûtiers, which has been an important religious site for centuries. Saint Pierre le Moutier is a beautiful destination that offers visitors a tranquil getaway with plenty of opportunities for exploration and relaxation.
