About the place:
Niort is a small town situated on the banks of the River Clain, in Western France. The population of Niort numbers about 25000 people and is known for its traditional architecture. The city center has many old buildings which are made from limestone with slate roofs (a common feature in this part of France). The town was founded by the Romans who named it Noviomagus Nemetum – meaning ‘new market’. It’s an important regional center for agriculture, brewing, and tourism.
Noirt it one of the largest cities in the area within the Centre-Val de Loire region and made it through to “the most beautiful villages” list despite its size – something that other larger cities didn’t make it into. The town has many interesting buildings, including La Mairie (The Town Hall) which was built during the Second Empire style under Napoleon III’s rule. There are also some fun shops around here if you’re looking for any souvenirs or gifts to take home with you. When you feel like getting out onto nature, however, you’re only a short walk away from the Niort forest which is just behind the town hall for you to explore.
Things to do in Noirt:
Take in a performance at Théâtre du Marais, one of France’s oldest theaters that were built back in 1768 and are listed as an official French historic monument since 1941. It has been operated by The Confraternity of St. James since 1949 with performances being held all throughout the year featuring music hall shows, plays, ballets, operas, and more to keep visitors entertained during their stay.
Experience life in another era at Fort Boyard Historic Site. The island fortress dates back to 1801 but it was used for military purposes up until 1986 when it became what it is today – an entertainment attraction where visitors can experience activities like exploring tunnels through candlelight or trying out high ropes courses professionally designed by Adventure Meritetes Ltd., one of Europe’s leading adventure sports training organizations. Visitors can even try being a castaway for the night.
