Coise-Sait-Jean-Pied-Gauthier, France is a village in the Hautes Alpes department of southeastern France. It’s located on the left bank of the river Guil and has a population of around 800 people. The village was founded by monks from Saint Jean de Maurienne and because of this it was originally called Coisa or Coisse (The word “coise” means “monk” in old Provencal). The area in which Coise-Sait-Jean-Pied-Gauthier is situated has been occupied for a long time by human beings. In the Neolithic era, people from Brittany and Normandy settled there. They were attracted to the forests of oak, beech, and chestnut trees that covered the hillsides. The name “Coise” comes from coïsse, i.e., wooded hillside or coës (wood).

Coise-Sait is a very popular ski resort. It’s the perfect destination for families with children because there are many different ski schools and it has a large variety of activities to do besides skiing. The village was recently awarded as one of the best family resorts in Europe in 2018 by Ski Magazine.
