About the place:
Just a few hours outside of Paris, Avignon is one of France’s most popular destinations. With its rich history in the theater, arts and beautiful scenery, it has been called “the city of monuments” because of all the historic sites that you can visit.
It was also known as Avigone during its time under the rule of the Papacy, and it served as their seat from 130s to 1377AD. The town played an important role for many years since there were at least seven popes who lived there before moving on to Rome.
The powerful lordship that ruled over Avignon gave way to another ruling family, which took hold after them. This period saw significant development around this area with new public buildings being erected along with churches dedicated to saints – such as St Rufus Church where Pope Clement V used to sleep when he was resident there.
